Downtown Suffolk, centered on the corner of Main St. and Washington
St., has undergone a remarkable revitalization over the past five years
and continues to improve every day with new shops and restaurants,
as well as restored buildings and homes. The pedestrian friendly
area is alive with activity during the day and into the evening. The
downtown is also home to numerous historic churches and neighborhoods
as well as several museums and the Suffolk Visitor Center. The
most exciting restoration project in Suffolk, just completed in 2006,
has been the transformation of the old Suffolk High School into the
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. Anchoring the other side of
downtown Suffolk is the new Hilton Garden Inn at Constant's Wharf with
a conference center as well as a city marina and park.
While a small town in many ways, downtown Suffolk also has many of
the strengths of a larger city with several large nationally known
employers (Planter's Peanuts, Lipton Tea, Ciba Specialty Chemicals)
and an outstanding regional Hospital (Obici Sentara). The downtown
area is also host to numerous yearly parades, festivals, and outdoor
concerts. Close to downtown are many attractions including several
golf courses, the unique Great Dismal Swamp, and numerous historic
villages such as Driver, Holland, Whaleyville, and Chuckatuck.
